Pinellas County Police to be in Full Force This Labor Day

Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies will be on roads and waterways this Labor Day weekend, making sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday.

Cecilia Barreda with the sheriff’s public information office said deputies would be out in full force to help create extra awareness to be safe during the last summer holiday.

Safety on the county’s waterways will be one area of focus. Barreda also reminded residents to be careful around water of all kinds, including backyard pools. Drowning and near-drowning accidents are not uncommon. Most can be prevented, she said.

The Center for Disease Control recommends designating a responsible adult to watch young children who are swimming or playing around water. When young children are involved, an adult should be within arm’s reach at all times. Adults should take care not to become distracted by activities, such as reading, playing cards, talking on the phone or texting.

Boat injuries also increase during the summer months and holiday weekends. The sheriff’s marine unit takes advantage of the increase in boater traffic to conduct its boating safety awareness campaign and Operation Kid Float.

Deputies will be stopping vessels to conduct safety inspections, and kids “caught” wearing their life jackets will get an Operation Kid Float T-shirt. Deputies also will be looking for boat operators who are impaired by drugs or alcohol.

According to 2009 statistics from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 18.5 percent of boating fatalities were caused by alcohol or drug use. In 2009, 65 people died in boating accidents in the state. Boaters falling overboard and drowning was the main cause of death.

Man Accused of DUI Manslaughter Registered BAC of .154

ST. PETERSBURG – A man involved in a drunken-driving wreck that killed a Florida man and his three grown sons this month had a blood-alcohol level of 0.154 percent, almost twice the legal limit, according to court records.

The suspect, who turned 21 this week, was charged with four counts of driving under the influence manslaughter, one count of DUI with serious bodily injury and one count of possession of alcohol by a person younger than 21.

The suspect, of St. Petersburg, is being held at the Pinellas County Jail on $220,250 bail.

About 12:45 a.m. Aug. 1, the suspect was at the wheel of a 2001 Chevrolet Impala traveling an estimated 80 mph before running a red light at 22nd Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St., where he crashed into a 2010 Ford Fusion, authorities said.

In the Fusion were four men from Orlando. All four died in the wreck.

Immediately after the wreck, the suspect waived his Miranda rights and said he had a plastic cup of Amsterdam liquor mixed with Four Loko, an alcoholic beverage. He also said he had smoked marijuana, police said.

The suspect was taken to Bayfront Medical Center after the wreck, where he had his blood drawn for medical purposes. From that, officers learned his blood-alcohol percent was 0.154, according to an affidavit by Michael Robertson, a traffic homicide investigator.

The legal limit for a driver in Florida is 0.08.

In the affidavit, Robertson sought and obtained a judge’s permission to have analyzed the suspect’s urine and blood samples, taken at the hospital, to determine the level of alcohol and other controlled substances in his system.

In another affidavit, Robertson asked for and obtained a judge’s permission to have examined a cell phone found outside Jordan’s Impala after the wreck. The suspect had said he had been at the home of a person named Kim in the Clearwater-Largo area before the wreck, and that Kim’s cell phone number would be in his phone.

Robertson wants the cell phone examined so he can track down anyone Jordan spoke to before the wreck and determine whether they saw Jordan drink and how much. The phone is also believed to contain phone numbers of people Jordan frequently spoke with. Robertson wants to speak with them, too.

First admission of guilt and now a blood alcohol sample registering off the charts. Speaking as a Florida DUI attorney, this would be one tough DUI case to beat, but I’m sure it is beatable nonetheless. Updates as they are available.

Pinellas County Bar Hours Extended to 3 a.m.

PINELLAS PARK – City police are concerned that since Pinellas County commissioners passed a law that allows bars to remain open later there will be a rise in DUI arrests and alcohol related crashes.

The county measure allows taverns to stay open until 3 a.m., but municipalities can establish earlier closing times by ordinance if they so desire.

Pinellas Park will most likely be among them, but that doesn’t mean that motorists who had a few too many in nearby cities can’t get in trouble while driving though Pinellas Park.

“We are concerned, yes,” said Sgt. Tracey Schofield, who supervises the special operations unit that tracks down drunk drivers though special enforcement patrols. “It’s wait and see and it is difficult to predict if we will see an increase in drunk driving.”

We will likely see an increase in DUI patrolling into the later hours of the night in Pinellas County now that the ordinances has passed. If you are accused of DUI feel free to contact a Pinellas County DUI attorney at our firm for a free consultation. Call 727-480-9675 anytime.

St. Petersburg Deputy to Keep Job Despite DUI Charge

ST. PETERSBURG — A St. Petersburg deputy made two plea bargains seven months after police said he drunkenly crashed into two cars and drove away. One spared him from jail time.

The other spared his job as a St. Petersburg police officer.

The deputy, 30, was suspended Wednesday for six weeks without pay from the St. Petersburg Police Department, ordered to stay away from alcoholic beverages for five years and subjected to two years of random testing.

Those were the strict conditions that police Chief Chuck Harmon required to let the deputy keep his job.

” He (the deputy) agreed to these conditions in lieu of termination,” the chief said.

Harmon said it’s the most severe punishment — short of termination — that he’s handed down in his nine years as chief.

“He is grateful to still be a member of the St. Petersburg Police Department,” said the deputy’s attorney, Rohom Khonsari.

Police spokesman Bill Proffitt said it was a lifeline offered to the deputy to salvage the career of a good officer with no prior disciplinary history. He has worked hard to make amends since his December 2009 arrest, including undergoing counseling, Proffitt said.

“Anthony realized he made a mistake from the beginning and he took full responsibility for his actions,” said Khonsari, an attorney with the prominent Tampa firm of Cohen, Foster and Romine.

The deputy was arrested in December after St. Petersburg police said he left a party and hit two cars on Fourth Street N on his way home. The deputy didn’t stop either time, police said, and was found sitting in his damaged car parked outside his Shore Acres home. Read the rest of this entry »
